Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Management in Grand Haven, MI

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss among people 50 and older, progressively damaging the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. This loss of central vision can make everyday tasks like reading, driving, and recognizing faces incredibly difficult. At Grand Haven Eyecare, Dr. Cynthia Geneva, OD, provides expert AMD diagnosis, monitoring, and management to help preserve your vision and maintain your quality of life.

Types of AMD and Early Detection

There are two main types of AMD:

  • Dry AMD: This is the most common form, caused by the thinning of the macula and the presence of small, yellow deposits called drusen. Dry AMD progresses slowly.
  • Wet AMD: This is a less common but more severe form. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid or blood, causing rapid and severe vision loss.

Early detection is the most important factor in managing both forms of AMD. Often, there are no symptoms in the early stages, making routine comprehensive eye exams a necessity. During your exam, Dr. Geneva will use advanced technology to carefully examine your macula for early signs of the disease.

Our Advanced AMD Services

We utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to provide precise and personalized care for our patients with AMD. Our services include:

  • Dilated Eye Exams: Dr. Geneva will use a special lens to get a clear view of your macula and look for drusen or other signs of damage.
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): This non-invasive imaging scan provides a detailed, cross-sectional view of your retina, allowing Dr. Geneva to detect subtle fluid buildup or changes that signal the progression of AMD.
  • Amsler Grid Testing: A simple at-home test we may provide that helps you monitor your central vision for any changes, such as wavy or distorted lines, which could indicate wet AMD.

AMD Management and Treatment

While there is currently no cure for AMD, there are effective strategies to slow its progression and, in some cases, prevent severe vision loss. Dr. Geneva’s management plans are tailored to each patient and may include:

  • Nutritional Guidance: Studies have shown that specific vitamins and antioxidants, such as those found in the AREDS 2 formula, can significantly reduce the risk of advanced AMD. Dr. Geneva will recommend appropriate supplements.
  • Lifestyle Recommendations: We will discuss the importance of quitting smoking and making healthy dietary choices, as these can impact the progression of AMD.
  • Referral for Treatment: If you are diagnosed with wet AMD, Dr. Geneva will promptly refer you to a retinal specialist for further evaluation and treatment, which often includes injections of anti-VEGF drugs to stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels.
  • Low Vision Services: For patients with significant vision loss from AMD, we offer low vision rehabilitation and devices to help you maximize your remaining sight and maintain your independence.
