What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which is the vital link between your eye and your brain. This damage is most often caused by abnormally high pressure inside your eye. Over time, this pressure can progressively injure the optic nerve, leading to a gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision. Since this vision loss happens slowly and without pain, many people don’t realize they have glaucoma until their central vision is also affected, by which point the damage is permanent.

Our Advanced Glaucoma Services

As part of your comprehensive eye exam, Dr. Geneva utilizes state-of-the-art technology to screen for and monitor glaucoma. Our diagnostic procedures include:

  • Intraocular Pressure (IOP) Measurement: We use an advanced, non-contact tonometer to accurately measure the pressure inside your eye.
  • Optic Nerve Evaluation: Dr. Geneva will use specialized instruments to carefully examine the appearance and health of your optic nerve for any signs of damage.
  • Visual Field Testing: This test measures your peripheral vision to detect any blind spots or areas of vision loss that may indicate glaucoma progression.
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): This non-invasive imaging device provides a detailed, cross-sectional view of the optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layer, allowing for precise and early detection of microscopic changes.

Glaucoma Management

If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, Dr. Geneva will work with you to create a customized treatment and management plan. While the damage caused by glaucoma cannot be reversed, its progression can almost always be controlled to prevent further vision loss. Treatment typically involves prescription eye drops to lower the pressure in your eye, and in some cases, oral medication or a referral for surgical procedures may be recommended.

Your ongoing care includes regular monitoring appointments to ensure your treatment plan is working and to make any necessary adjustments. Our team is committed to helping you manage this condition effectively so you can maintain your vision and quality of life.
