What is Low Vision?

Low vision is a term that describes a significant, permanent loss of visual function that cannot be corrected with standard eyewear or medical treatment. It’s not blindness, but a condition where a person still has some usable vision.

Low vision can be caused by a variety of eye diseases and conditions, including:

  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): The most common cause, leading to a loss of central vision.
  • Glaucoma: Damages the optic nerve, often resulting in a loss of peripheral (side) vision.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy: Damages the blood vessels in the retina, causing fluctuating or blurry vision.
  • Retinitis Pigmentosa: A group of genetic diseases that lead to a gradual loss of peripheral and night vision.
  • Stroke or Traumatic Brain Injury

Our Low Vision Services

Dr. Geneva conducts a comprehensive low vision evaluation to understand how your vision loss impacts your life. During this in-depth assessment, we will discuss your visual goals, whether it’s reading a book, seeing faces, watching TV, or simply staying safe in your home.

Based on your individual needs, we will explore a range of low vision aids and rehabilitation strategies. These aren’t just one-size-fits-all solutions; they are personalized tools designed to enhance your remaining vision.

Low Vision Aids include:

  • Optical Magnifiers: We offer a variety of handheld, stand, and spectacle-mounted magnifiers to make reading and other near tasks easier.
  • Telescopic Devices: These devices, often mounted on glasses, can help with distance tasks like watching television or seeing street signs.
  • Absorptive Lenses: Specialized filters and tints that reduce glare, improve contrast, and enhance comfort.
  • Prismatic Glasses: Designed for specific conditions to help with reading or double vision.
  • Electronic Magnifiers: These desktop or portable devices use a camera to project magnified images onto a screen, often with high-contrast color settings.
